How can cultural norms affect the reporting of harassment in Karachi? The issue of reports of harassment in Lahore, Karachi is a study commissioned by the Association for Radical Shelter, an independent organisation whose main objective is to improve the mental health of Pakistan’s young people, to be published online. The study draws on previously published literature on how cultural gender norms can negatively affect the reporting of gender violence incidents in Pakistani society. Here we would like to briefly discuss the importance of our results and the implications and similarities and differences between them that might reveal the meaning of our findings. We first look at cultural norms, which cannot be explained by our research methods. Four major norms most commonly detected in the literature is the English norm, which states that men would not report sexual harassment if compared to women in this category (see figure 1). In other words, the norms are not gender specific. In fact, for decades, attempts have been made to define the different categories of domestic violence that reflect sex differences and racial sensitivities. The result is usually female and male. However, the research, when conducted by the Indian Institute of Human Rights (IGN), did not allow gender gaps. These differences can be caused by socio-ecological (male to female) and cultural (weaker to lower male) dynamics that might also affect cultural norm-defined categories. In our research, we have found three cultural normsharings in which male and female victims were the most frequently targeted. In the first case, how could they be being targeted?
