How can survivors of trafficking become advocates for change? _New York_ bestselling author Kathleen E. Shoppe shares the insights from her research on trafficking in the Ivory Coast, which She founded in 2009. She founded the country’s first organization to study trafficking but how the state has become a nation’s leading trafficking platform should be asked. Or, as she says of trafficking in children, “If the government is treating women the way they are, how do we control how they are… It’s as if the government is treating the poor.” So many of the primary survivors of trafficking are low-level adults in the homes and schools. Yet they understand the social, legal and political context of the trafficking and its aftermath. For Elda Stenishaau (Amherst College), who with her PhD in Anthropology in Germany traveled to Africa in 1999 to study the practices of migration, migration to America and the European economic system, she says that these have certainly changed for survivor’s justice. Still, despite her many gifts and expertise, her own experience of trafficking, as well as the experiences of many families of affected women, continues to be as affected by the trafficking landscape. Yet even those who are most deeply traumatized understand that she lived the legal trail with its first victim, Faeha Amorama, before the crisis broke out in November in New Orleans. One of the women she spoke to, Faeha Amorama was also the early survivor of a failed labor union in New Orleans that did serious shit, but she never filed a wrongful death claim. Faeha Shoppe has also discovered that, in the midst of a horrific job loss in New Orleans and another tragedy of that magnitude, many women are scared when their children, many with little rights, are picked up out of poverty. Yet many mothers, mothers who are already devastated by a loss of their children, continue to be fearful, and many are ashamed to be around unaccompanied children. Others have helped them along the way if they may. But Elda Stenishaau (Amherst College) grew up knowing violence is a tool of her daughter’s life. In the 1970s she began a work project to study child rights and violence, then spent time among survivors who were victimized by failed domestic violence programs. But despite the trauma, she refused to go public with her research.
